Has your basement flooded due to heavy rains? If so, you know that it can create a disastrous mess in a short amount of time. To keep your basement from flooding, you need to know how to pick the right sump pump for your home. The decision can be quite confusing with several kinds of pumps available that differ on what they do and how they perform.

To help you decide which type of pump to install, let’s take a look at the two most common types of pumps:

  • Submersible Pumps: A submersible pump is the least expensive type of pump and the easiest to install. They simply drop right into the water and pump excess water from your basement. Because they generate heat while they are running, being directly in the water helps keep them cool. Submersible pumps typically last for 5 to 7 year, and carry a 1 to 3 year warranty. If you’re only pumping clear water from your basement, you can use a basic sump pump. Should you need to remove sanitary waste solids and clear water, you’ll need an ejector pump.
  • Pedestal Pumps: A pedestal pump is the heaviest duty pump you can install. They generally last between 30 and 40 years, and carry a 10-year warranty. If you’re planning to live in your home for a number of years, have a finished basement, or store valuables in your basement, a pedestal pump is a good choice for a pump that is long-lasting, has the best capacity—and comes with a hefty warranty.
