5 Ways to Save Water and Lower Your Utility Bills

Did you know that fixing a leaky tap can save water around 3,000 gallons yearly? Chicago uses up to 750 gallons of water; most of this water comes from Lake Michigan and nearby sources. That’s a huge amount, but the problem is that if you have a leaky tap or a leak in the plumbing lines, a significant amount will go down the drain. Wasting water isn’t just harmful for the environment; it also means higher bills for your home.

If you suspect a leaky faucet at your home, call plumbing services in Chicago immediately. Every drop you save helps lower your utility bills and reduces strain on your plumbing system. If you live in a busy city like Chicago, using water wisely can also help prevent costly repairs and the need for frequent plumbing services.

Here’s how you can make small, smart changes that add up to big savings

5 Ways To Reduce Water Wastage As Per Professional Plumbing Services In Chicago

Reducing your water usage at home is a way to help do your bit for the environment. Sounds like a win-win to us! Let’s discuss the five tips you can start using today to reduce your water wastage and save on energy.

1. Fix Leaks and Install Efficient Fixtures

Leaky faucets and running toilets might seem harmless, but they can also waste thousands of gallons of water every year. Fixing and detecting leaks quickly is one of the easiest ways to save water. If you notice any dripping taps or running toilets, call a professional plumber in Chicago to get them fixed before they drain your wallet.

Next, upgrade your fixtures. Installing low-flow showerheads, faucet aerators, and efficient toilets can make a huge difference. These fixtures use less water without reducing pressure, which means you get the same comfort with less waste. If you’re planning a new water meter installation or bathroom remodeling, consider adding these efficient options. You’ll see savings right away on your next bill.

2. Adjust Your Bathroom Habits

Your bathroom is one of the biggest sources of daily water use, but it’s also where you can make easy improvements.

  • Take shorter showers: Try to keep showers under five minutes. This small change can save water up to 1,500 gallons of water a year.
  • Turn off the tap: Don’t let water run while brushing your teeth or shaving. Turning it off can save water 200 gallons each month.
  • Choose showers over baths: Baths use more water than showers, so switching helps cut down on usage.

Simple habits like these go a long way toward conservation. If you need help installing low-flow fixtures or checking for bathroom leaks, professional plumbing services in Chicago can help make your home more water-efficient.

3. Optimize Appliance Usage

Appliances like dishwashers and washing machines are essential, but they use a lot of water. The key is to use them wisely.

  • Run full loads only: Whether it’s your dishwasher or washing machine, always wait until it’s full before running a cycle. Running half machine loads saves both water and energy.
  • Skip pre-rinsing: Scrape food off dishes instead of rinsing them before loading the dishwasher. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says this can save hundreds of gallons yearly.
  • Upgrade your appliances: ENERGY STAR-certified washing machines and dishwashers use significantly less water and energy. Over time, they pay for themselves through lower bills.

Optimizing appliance use isn’t complicated; it’s about timing and efficiency. A reliable plumber in Chicago can also help install or inspect these water-saving appliances to ensure they’re running efficiently.

4. Be Smart with Water Outside the Home

Water-saving doesn’t stop at your front door. Outdoor water use, especially during warmer months, can quickly add up.

  • Water your garden wisely: Water early in the morning or late in the evening to reduce evaporation.
  • Collect rainwater: Use barrels to gather rainwater for your garden. It’s free and sustainable.
  • Use car washes instead of hoses: Automatic car washes often recycle water and use less than washing your car at home.

For larger outdoor setups, like irrigation systems or water meter installation, professional plumbing experts in Chicago can help design systems that use every drop efficiently.

5. Make Simple Kitchen Changes

Your kitchen habits can also make a big impact on water use.

  • Keep cold water in the fridge: Instead of running the tap until the water cools, store a pitcher of cold water in the refrigerator.
  • Wash vegetables smartly: Rinse produce in a bowl instead of under running water. Then reuse that water for your plants.
  • Use your dishwasher: Modern dishwashers use less water than washing by hand, especially when you only run full loads.

These little adjustments don’t just save water; they save money on your water and energy bills every month.

FAQs

1. Can using a dishwasher save water more than washing by hand?

Yes. A modern dishwasher uses much less water per cycle than hand-washing many dishes. Run it full for the best savings.

2. What’s the point of replacing old toilets with efficient models?

Old toilets use a lot more water per flush. New low-flow or dual-flush models can cut indoor water use by up to 20 %.

3. Do outdoor water habits really matter if most waste is indoors?

Yes. In many homes, outdoor use (lawns, washing cars) accounts for a large share. Fixing outdoor waste adds up to large savings.

4. How long should I let a leak go before fixing it?

Any leak should be fixed as soon as you detect it. Even small drips left for days or weeks can waste thousands of gallons per year.

5. Will tracking my water meter help me save water?

Yes. Watching your meter and noting unusually high usage helps detect leaks and waste early, so you can act before bills rise.

Isaac and Adam just inspected the drain line below our 100-year-old bungalow. They were very professional and took the time to explain the pipe's condition and the available repair options in language I could easily understand. Their willingness to answer questions gave me confidence in their recommendations. I was impressed and will ask for them again when it's time to repipe our house.
Response from the owner:Jason, thank you for the kind review. We’re glad Isaac and Adam could thoroughly inspect your drain line and clearly walk you through the pipe’s condition and repair options, especially in an older home like yours. It means a lot that their patience in answering questions helped you feel confident, and we’d be happy to send them again when you’re ready to repipe.

Great workmanship and friendly team, but expect to pay double and be billed for every single thing. I’m giving Baethke Plumbing 3 stars because while their technicians are genuinely kind, courteous, and do high-quality physical work, their billing practices are rigid to a fault. It’s no secret that Baethke is expensive. You can expect to pay roughly 2x what an average Chicago plumber charges. Honestly, I didn’t mind paying a premium upfront because the professionalism and craftsmanship are clearly there. In my case, I paid over $4,000 for the diagnosis and repair of a corroded copper pipe, and the invoice specifically noted that the line was water-tested afterward to confirm the leak was resolved. However, a week or two later, I still had water coming in and had to call them back out. It turned out there was another pinhole leak from corrosion just two feet further downstream on that exact same copper pipe. While I understand that their warranty only covers the specific section of pipe they replaced, they charged me an additional $800 just to diagnose and tell me that the exact same line still had a leak two feet away. When you pay over $4,000 to a top-tier company to diagnose and fix a leaking pipe, including a post-repair water test, you expect them to verify that the rest of that immediate run isn't actively leaking before wrapping up, rather than assuming the corrosion stopped right at the cut. More importantly, charging a customer $800 just to point out a missed pinhole two feet down the same pipe feels inappropriate given how much was already spent. Had the remaining leak been coming from a different source, I could understand but from the same pipe is a different story. Overall, Baethke is a good plumbing company with very nice people who do solid work. Just go in knowing that not only are their base rates exceptionally high, but they also bill strictly by the book for every step, even in follow-up situations where a little goodwill or common sense should apply.
Response from the owner:Mateo, thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for recognizing the professionalism and workmanship of our team. We understand your frustration with the additional diagnostic charge, particularly given the proximity of the second leak to the original repair. We appreciate you sharing your perspective on the situation, and your concerns regarding the follow-up visit and billing are important to us. We strive to provide quality service throughout every step of the process, and we appreciate you bringing this experience to our attention. I did review everything that Josh did and unfortunately, the untreated, Acidic Combustion Condensate that had been discharged for so long into that copper drain pipe has significantly thinned the pipe. It was 2 weeks later for that additional leak and we can't guarantee there won't be another unless all of the copper piping is replaced. That would be significant. If you would like to discuss this you are always welcome to call me either in the office at 773-276-5430, or on my cell at 773-447-4913. Thank you again.

Excellent service and skilled plumbing. Josh and his apprentice were outstanding. No shortcuts, precision in their work, accommodating. I was not looking forward to having work done due yo the cost of plumbing and the fear of shoddy work (past experience). This was the best plumbing experience I have ever had and it is worth every penny.
Response from the owner:Lisa, thank you for taking the time to share this. We’re glad Josh and his apprentice delivered careful, precise work and made the whole process feel straightforward and respectful. It means a lot to hear we helped ease your concerns and that the results felt worth the investment.
