10 Questions to Ask Before Installing a New Water Heater in Your Chicago Home

Installing a new water heater is a significant investment that affects both your home’s comfort and energy efficiency, especially in a city like Chicago, where cold winters demand reliable heating. Whether you’re replacing an outdated unit or installing a new one, it’s crucial to make an informed decision. With so many options available, how can you ensure you’re choosing the right one for your needs?

Asking the right questions before water heater replacement can save you from unexpected costs, poor performance, or frequent repairs down the line. This guide will help you navigate the decision-making process by providing clear insights into key factors such as size, energy efficiency, and installation requirements.

By understanding these key considerations, you will make the most informed choice for your home’s hot water needs.

Water Heater Replacement: Key Things to Ask

Replacing your water heater is a significant decision that impacts your home’s comfort and energy efficiency. Asking the right questions upfront ensures you choose the best option for your needs and avoid costly mistakes down the line.

1. What Type of Water Heater Should You Choose for Your Home?

When choosing a water heater, understanding the different types is essential. Every household is unique, so the kind of water heater you choose should align with your household’s specific needs and budget.

  • Tankless Water Heater:

Tankless water heaters provide hot water on demand, saving space and energy. Ideal for small to medium households with moderate water usage.

  • Storage Tank Water Heater:

The most common type is storing a large amount of hot water. Ideal for larger households or those who use a significant amount of hot water.

  • Hybrid Water Heater:

A combination of a traditional tank and energy-saving features that offers the best of both worlds.

Deciding between a tankless water heater vs tank depends on your household size, available space, and hot water usage. This is one of the most important decisions you’ll make for long-term efficiency and comfort.

2. What Size Water Heater Do I Need for My Household?

Choosing the correct size is crucial to ensuring your home water heater operates efficiently. If the water heater is too small, it won’t meet your household’s demands. On the other hand, an oversized unit will lead to wasted energy and higher utility bills.

  • Small Household (1-2 people):

Typically, a 30-40 gallon tank is sufficient for a small household with low to moderate hot water demand.

  • Medium Household (3-4 people):

A 50-60-gallon tank should cover average daily water usage.

  • Large Household (5+ people):

Larger households with high water usage may require a 75-80-gallon tank.

If you’re opting for a tankless water heater, the size depends on the flow rate and temperature rise required for your home’s hot water needs.

3. Is the Water Heater Energy-Efficient?

Efficiency is one of the most important factors to consider when installing a new water heater. Energy-efficient water heaters can lower your utility bills and reduce your carbon footprint.

  • Energy Star Rating:

Look for models with an Energy Star rating, which indicates the heater meets high-efficiency standards and helps you save on energy costs.

  • On-Demand Heating:

Tankless water heaters heat water on demand, providing energy savings by eliminating the need to constantly maintain a tank of hot water.

  • Maximized Efficiency:

Hybrid models offer the best of both worlds, combining traditional heating methods with modern energy-saving technologies for optimal efficiency.

Choosing an energy-efficient water heater may cost more upfront, but the savings on your energy bills will quickly offset the initial investment.

4. What Are the Installation Requirements for the New Water Heater?

When considering water heater installation, it’s essential to understand the space and infrastructure needed.

  • Ventilation:

Gas-powered water heaters require proper ventilation to release combustion gases.

  • Electrical:

Electric water heaters may require a dedicated circuit and breaker.

  • Space:

Ensure you have adequate space for the water heater. If opting for a tankless water heater, you’ll need to account for its installation near water sources and power outlets.

Consulting with a licensed plumber at Baethke Plumbing is vital to ensure all the safe and compliant requirements for installation are met.

5. How Much Does a New Water Heater Cost?

The cost of a water heater varies greatly depending on its type, size, and installation requirements. Here are some rough price estimates:

  • Tank Water Heaters:

 $300 – $1,000 (excluding installation)

  • Tankless Water Heaters:

$500 – $2,000 (excluding installation)

  • Hybrid Water Heaters:

$1,000 – $3,000 (excluding installation)

Labor costs can also vary based on location and complexity, with installations ranging from $300 to $2,000. It’s essential to get a detailed estimate that includes both the unit and installation costs.

6. What Is the Lifespan of the New Water Heater?

Most home water heater models last between 10 and 15 years. However, this lifespan can vary based on factors such as:

  • Water Quality:

Hard water can shorten your water heater’s lifespan due to mineral buildup.

  • Maintenance:

Regular flushing and inspection can extend the life of your unit.

  • Type of Heater:

Tankless heaters tend to have a longer lifespan compared to traditional tank models.

Keep track of your water heater’s age and consider replacing it when you approach the 10- to 15-year mark to avoid unexpected breakdowns.

7. What Maintenance Will Be Required?

Water heaters require routine maintenance to ensure long-term efficiency. Some basic tasks include:

  • Flushing the Tank:

To remove sediment buildup that can reduce efficiency and cause damage.

  • Checking the Anode Rod:

To prevent corrosion inside the tank.

  • Inspecting the Pressure Relief Valve:

Ensuring it functions properly for safety.

Regular maintenance will help your water heater last longer and work more efficiently, especially for traditional tank models.

8. Is There a Warranty for the New Water Heater?

It’s essential to understand the warranty that comes with your new water heater. Most manufacturers offer warranties ranging from 6 to 12 years, depending on the model and brand. Here’s what you should look for:

  • Warranty Duration:

The longer the warranty, the better the manufacturer’s confidence in the product.

  • What’s Covered:

Some warranties cover only the tank, while others include all parts and labor.

Ensure that the warranty covers both parts and labor for any potential water heater repairs, and keep your documentation handy.

9. What Are the Environmental Impacts of the Water Heater?

Water heaters consume a significant amount of energy, and making an eco-friendly choice can help reduce your home’s environmental impact. Consider:

  • Energy-efficient models:

As mentioned earlier, these use less energy, reducing your household’s carbon footprint.

  • Renewable energy options:

Solar water heaters are an excellent choice for those seeking a long-term, eco-conscious investment.

An energy-efficient unit not only helps you save money but also reduces your environmental footprint over time.

10. How Will the Old Water Heater Be Disposed Of?

Once your new water heater is installed, you’ll need to dispose of the old one. Many water heater installation companies offer removal services, and some even recycle the old units.

Make sure to ask about disposal fees or find a service that offers free recycling to avoid environmental harm.

Conclusion

Choosing and installing the right water heater for your home is crucial for long-term savings, comfort, and efficiency. By asking the right questions about selecting a water heater —energy efficiency, costs, and installation —you’ll make an informed decision that suits your home and budget. Don’t forget to consult with a licensed professional like Baethke Plumbing for installation, ensuring everything is done correctly and safely.

Great workmanship and friendly team, but expect to pay double and be billed for every single thing. I’m giving Baethke Plumbing 3 stars because while their technicians are genuinely kind, courteous, and do high-quality physical work, their billing practices are rigid to a fault. It’s no secret that Baethke is expensive. You can expect to pay roughly 2x what an average Chicago plumber charges. Honestly, I didn’t mind paying a premium upfront because the professionalism and craftsmanship are clearly there. In my case, I paid over $4,000 for the diagnosis and repair of a corroded copper pipe, and the invoice specifically noted that the line was water-tested afterward to confirm the leak was resolved. However, a week or two later, I still had water coming in and had to call them back out. It turned out there was another pinhole leak from corrosion just two feet further downstream on that exact same copper pipe. While I understand that their warranty only covers the specific section of pipe they replaced, they charged me an additional $800 just to diagnose and tell me that the exact same line still had a leak two feet away. When you pay over $4,000 to a top-tier company to diagnose and fix a leaking pipe, including a post-repair water test, you expect them to verify that the rest of that immediate run isn't actively leaking before wrapping up, rather than assuming the corrosion stopped right at the cut. More importantly, charging a customer $800 just to point out a missed pinhole two feet down the same pipe feels inappropriate given how much was already spent. Had the remaining leak been coming from a different source, I could understand but from the same pipe is a different story. Overall, Baethke is a good plumbing company with very nice people who do solid work. Just go in knowing that not only are their base rates exceptionally high, but they also bill strictly by the book for every step, even in follow-up situations where a little goodwill or common sense should apply.
Response from the owner:Mateo, thank you for taking the time to share your experience and for recognizing the professionalism and workmanship of our team. We understand your frustration with the additional diagnostic charge, particularly given the proximity of the second leak to the original repair. We appreciate you sharing your perspective on the situation, and your concerns regarding the follow-up visit and billing are important to us. We strive to provide quality service throughout every step of the process, and we appreciate you bringing this experience to our attention. I did review everything that Josh did and unfortunately, the untreated, Acidic Combustion Condensate that had been discharged for so long into that copper drain pipe has significantly thinned the pipe. It was 2 weeks later for that additional leak and we can't guarantee there won't be another unless all of the copper piping is replaced. That would be significant. If you would like to discuss this you are always welcome to call me either in the office at 773-276-5430, or on my cell at 773-447-4913. Thank you again.

Excellent service and skilled plumbing. Josh and his apprentice were outstanding. No shortcuts, precision in their work, accommodating. I was not looking forward to having work done due yo the cost of plumbing and the fear of shoddy work (past experience). This was the best plumbing experience I have ever had and it is worth every penny.
Response from the owner:Lisa, thank you for taking the time to share this. We’re glad Josh and his apprentice delivered careful, precise work and made the whole process feel straightforward and respectful. It means a lot to hear we helped ease your concerns and that the results felt worth the investment.

Response from the owner:Carl, thank you for choosing Baethke Plumbing and for sharing this.
