The owner of Baethke Plumbing, John Baethke, is one of the Chicagoland area’s trusted plumbing professionals, and his advice is valued by residential and commercial property owners along with other plumbing and construction professionals.

Recently, John Baethke joined Kelly Castrogiovanni, owner of Terry Plumbing Co., Matt Buckley, Director of Public Safety for the Village of Riverside, Illinois, and S.J. Peters, executive director, PCA of Greater Chicago to discuss ways to prevent job site theft—a problem that’s becoming more and more prevalent.

Jobsite theft is a huge problem that costs construction companies up to $1 billion dollars each year by some estimates. Unfortunately, the recovery rate for equipment and materials stolen from job sites is only about 25%, and that’s why prevention is even more important.

Learn more about this costly problem and get tips from top industry professionals. Listen to the podcast here: Jobsite Theft (buzzsprout.com) and check out additional tips below for preventing job site theft.

  • Fencing and Lighting: Secure fencing will not prevent all job site theft, but it does provide an extra obstacle. Thieves aren’t crazy about having a spotlight on their activities, so excellent lighting, including motion lights, are good security measures to consider for any job site.
  • Control Access: Instead of an open job site, control access via ID cards, gates, security guards, or other measures.
  • Cameras: Install security cameras, including both visible and stealth cameras. You want potential thieves to know the cameras are there, but keeping some hidden will prevent criminals from disabling them all.
  • GPS Technology: Attach GPS tracking devices to particularly valuable equipment to maximize the chances of getting the items back should they be stolen.
  • Security Guards: Hiring security guards is an additional expense, but it’s a smart investment that can save you from potentially devastating financial losses due to theft.
